A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

Director: Richard Lester
Year Released: 1966
Rating: 2.5

You won't hear me say this again for a long, long time, but I had really just wished the whole thing would slow down for a little while - everybody speaks too quickly, the plot moves to quickly and everything is frantic and wild and out of control. I had also wished director Richard Lester (known for the Beatles pictures) and cinematographer Nicolas Roeg just backed up a little bit - any closer and it would seem 3D. However, a lot that transpires is in the picture's favor; the songs are catchy and Zero Mostel is a fantastic actor and lead performer. The comedic timing is more often than not dead-on, and it's occasionally very amusing, though by the end you'll most likely grow sick of the tiresome and too-heavily relied upon cross-dressing and homophobic jokes for cheap chuckles.
