Amazing Spider-Man, The

Director:  Marc Webb
Year Released:  2012
Rating:  1.5

A completely unnecessary reboot (how I hate that term) of the Spider-Man franchise replaces Tobey Maguire with Andrew Garfield and has him run through the paces of being abandoned by his parents, going through high school as a loser, getting bit by a spider, honing his new skills as a super-hero, getting the girl (Emma Stone) and saving the city from a monster (in this case, Rhys Ifans as The Lizard). The Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies from a decade ago were (generally) well-received and profitable so Hollywood decides it needs to bring that same exact story back and rethink the way Raimi made his 2002 Spider-Man, except with even less originality or personality and a villain that isn't as distinctive as Doctor Octopus or the Green Goblin. Basically, it comes down to being told the same exact tale with the same exact plot points as before, not unlike an elderly relative repeating an old war story and changing some minor details: déjà vu morphs into ennui ... and there's no antidote for that in sight.
