The Strange Case of Angelica

Director: Manoel de Oliveira
Year Released: 2010
Rating: 2.0

A photographer is given the seemingly mundane task of photographing a dead young lady, but soon discovers that in his lens (and on his prints) she seems very much alive - cut to classical Hollywood depictions of the two of them floating around like ghosts. Basically a simple parable stretched into a feature length picture, it appears to be a testament to spiritual connections more than anything - the photographer connects so strongly with the spectre of the dead girl he more or less wills himself to die so he can join her (as unhealthy as that sounds). Some leeway needs to be given to Oliveira, who is (currently) over 100 years old and still working (which is truly remarkable), but this garners no more than a shrug. That said, if I stare long enough at this picture I have of Audrey Hepburn can she come back to life, too?
