Grass Labyrinth

Director:  Shûji Terayama
Year Released:  1983
Rating:  2.0

Medium-length offering by avant-garde maestro Terayama is awash in sex and manic energy, which may have worked in his transgressive masterpiece Emperor Tomato Ketchup, but could use a bit of cohesion here. Surrealism and the cinema have often been strange bedfellows, and the tendency to take the never-ending ideas of the inventive mind, film them and tape them all together is tempting but ill-advised - this is, for all intents and purposes, a pleasant-looking Freudian mish-mash.
