The Tourist

Director: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck
Year Released: 2010
Rating: 1.0

Preening, vacant Angelina Jolie - the girlfriend of a notorious thief - has a chance encounter with an American tourist (Johnny Depp) on a train to Venice and the two form a strongly unlikely union as they get chased around by the authorities and by some baddies. If the events that transpire don't make a lot of sense - and the dialogue seems to be lacking - the name "Christopher McQuarrie" as screenwriter should be carefully noted: he was responsible for the equally contrived The Usual Suspects, which also featured a 'twist' that makes little sense (oh, those useful microchips to change your voice!). It's actually based on a French film with Sophie Marceau, which I never saw, but if that is anything like this it's probably equally unimaginative and poorly developed. Venice upstages both stars, which is ironic because it's presently sinking.
