Side Street

Poor part-time postal worker Farley Granger, with pregnant wife Cathy O'Donnell back home, makes a bad decision and steals $30,000 from an office, only to find himself in the middle of a murder plot. Comparisons to Hitchcock are fair, I guess, especially since "guilt" is really Granger's problem - had he kept his mouth shut and hid his findings well, he might have avoided almost being killed by hoodlums or tracked down by the police. I find it so much easier to "like" some of these classic noirs than necessarily "love" them: this one reiterates how crime doesn't pay but it's human to make mistakes.
