A crazed woman is imprisoned and dances around in her cell while her husband, working as a janitor, tries to free her. Though intertitles would have been nice to help figure out what's going on - I admit to being a little confused at parts (it doesn't help that my copy of this is basically third generation VHS dub and the hour-long version) - it is so visually creative and haunting (especially the attempted escape with all those staring faces) that clarity of story comes in second to creativity (the soundtrack, hissy and creaky, is also effective). Kinugasa tries to capture the "internal state" of a mentally ill individual, and for the most part he is successful.
