Swingers

Director: Doug Liman
Year Released: 1996
Rating: 3.0

This was one of the more notable - and quotable - comedies from the 90's, a buddy movie about a struggling comedian (Jon Favreau) trying to get over a bad breakup and how his equally struggling actor friends (led by a supremely charismatic Vince Vaughn) help lift his spirits. The script is witty - if fundamentally shallow - and aided substantially by the chemistry between Favreau and Vaughn, the latter given almost all of the best lines (his timing is impeccable). The humor balances out the self-pity: pretty girls, it seems, will forever be easier to land than paying gigs (even as Goofy at Disneyland). What hasn't aged well: the swing music.
