Paprika

Director: Satoshi Kon
Year Released: 2006
Rating: 1.5

Visual orgy that dispenses with plot and logic for gross excess: Kon wants this to be a message movie about the confusing and mentally troubling 'dream worlds' we live in (Internet, 'real life' and the cinema), and 'proves' this point by having them blend together into an indecipherable one. It runs about thirty minutes too long and lifts wholesale from The Portable Jung (who no doubt was a major source of inspiration); frankly, I thought this concept was done with much more effectiveness in Assayas's Demonlover. There's a lot of decent anime out there, but Kon's is the most 'cinematic' so he gets a lot of attention: fans know that some of the best anime is serialized and not in easy to digest 90 minute chunks....
