Torment

Director: Alf Sjöberg
Year Released: 1944
Rating: 2.0

A fresh-faced student gets caught in a love triangle with an alcoholic shop steward and his Latin teacher in Ingmar Bergman's first script, which most certainly has to be based on an instructor in his own life he knew and hated. It's arguably more interesting as a starting point for the development of Bergman's themes than a movie in itself - I was never completely convinced by the plot, which - for the duration - never frees itself from its contrivances. The performances aren't much to rave about, either, though watching cult figure Mai Zetterling overact is a curious spectacle.
