Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears

Director: Vladimir Menshov
Year Released: 1980
Rating: 2.0

Uneven, essentially two-part picture that has three young women looking for romance and dreams of prestige in the first part only to find mostly disillusionment twenty years later. Part one is more soap opera-ish in nature as the girls go man-hunting; for the second section, it pretty much ignores two of the women, focusing on the one that got pregnant but managed to climb to the top of her factory. In terms of politics it's evasive - the hardest working of all the women gets promoted and praised; she's also the success story of the three women (the other two end up miserable) - although its sole function is to be a romantic comedy modeled after Hollywood and not criticize living under oppressive tyranny.
