A Great Day in Harlem

Director: Jean Bach
Year Released: 1994
Rating: 3.0

Compelling nostalgia piece that commemorates the famous Art Kane photo in New York of some of the most prominent jazz musicians of the day. Though many notable names of the era are missing from the shot, the fact that so many did get up early and meet (their sleeping schedules differ from most individuals) is magical - even some of the difficult types got there, including Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk. Funny, too, is the way in which the surviving men and women enjoy gossiping and telling tales about others in the same picture.
