Another Thin Man

Director:  W.S. Van Dyke
Year Released:  1939
Rating:  3.0

Third Nick & Nora Charles film, this time with a baby to go along with the dog, their drinking problem and, naturally, another ridiculously complex crime mystery to casually pick apart. I thought the Thin Man sequel, After the Thin Man, was a minor slip-up, but this one finds the series back in line - the interaction between Myrna Loy and William Powell is irresistibly charming with the two testing the strength of their marriage while 'on the case' and somehow making their face pecking and pet names for each other endearing instead of sickening. It's not in any way a great murder mystery or even an exemplary movie, but it coasts on charm and refuses to take itself seriously - it's smart enough to know it doesn't have to.
