My Favorite Season

Director: André Téchiné
Year Released: 1993
Rating: 2.5

Brother and sister tandem (Daniel Auteuil and Catherine Deneuve) whose relationship is on rocky ground - it's suggested that Auteuil has less than platonic feelings for Deneuve - come together when their mother falls ill, even sharing an apartment. It actually becomes less and less engaging as it goes along, the strongest parts being closest to the beginning, when Téchiné focused less on the siblings and more on the family as a whole, capturing the claustrophobia of Christmas time - everyone stuck in the house, fighting (or at least that's the way it always is in my house, anyway). The ending is not nearly as satisfying as it'd like to be (having the characters discuss the title during lunch and then following that up with a poem recited by Deneuve isn't a strong way to end things), and a sexual encounter between Deneuve and a young physician/intern is hardly realistic.
