Beau Brummell

Director: Curtis Bernhardt
Year Released: 1954
Rating: 2.0

Lackluster biopic of the infamous British fop who leaves the military, attacks the government, befriends the Prince of Wales and dies from tuberculosis. Aside from the intriguing friendship between the Prince (Peter Ustinov) and Brummell (Stewart Granger) - and a coded one at that: their (adopted) dogs, Napoleon and Bonaparte, are lovers - the predictable rise and fall mapping of his life is not exactly landmark, though it is a little curious that a movie that has Elizabeth Taylor in it does so little with her character. Ustinov's sniveling twit - he acts like a big baby when he doesn't get his way - is contrasted well with Granger's self-assurance; they make a formidable duo during the brief time they're on speaking terms.
