Trouble in Mind

Director: Alan Rudolph
Year Released: 1985
Rating: 2.5

A strange, odd, confusing film by strange, odd, confusing filmmaker Alan Rudolph. Hawk, played by Kris Kristofferson, is a drifter who gets released from jail and becomes involved with the lives of a young couple (Lori Singer and Keith Carradine), a peculiar gangster by the name of Hilly (played sans makeup by Divine) and a waitress who runs a seedy diner (Genevieve Bujold). It all plays out like a fragmented dream - scenes begin and end abruptly, and some of them don't make sense and/or don't seem to belong (which can lead to frustration). In terms of mood, half the movie tries to be funny (some of it works, some of it is campy), while the other half seems to be playing it straight (Kristofferson's bits in particular).
