Intensely macho depiction of combat that becomes ridiculous in parts: during training, live ammo is used thereby injuring one of the trainees, during practice knife drills cadets are cut in the face by cruel commanders and, in a show of true manliness, Alain Delon is given a chance to slap around shifty Claudia Cardinale. Even Anthony Quinn, as the leader of the 'lost command' (that gets sent into Algiers to straighten out the problem of dissenters wanting freedom from French rule), shows 'respect' for a deceased soldier by sleeping with the man's wife. Dead innocents are just a part of the process, and in the end gutless violence and never-say-die attitude remind one of modern day American strong-arm tactics.
